What Is Weight Converter?

This weight converter switches a value between kilograms, pounds, stones, grams and ounces using exact conversion factors, with no rounding along the way.

It is the tool for the everyday friction of mixed units: a scale reading in stones and pounds, a recipe in ounces, a gym plate in kilograms and a doctor who wants all of it in one system.

Understanding Your Weight Converter Result

Every unit here belongs to one of two systems. The metric system uses grams and kilograms, defined in powers of ten. The imperial and US customary systems use ounces, pounds and stones, with 16 ounces to a pound and 14 pounds to a stone.

The bridge between them is fixed by international agreement: one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Every other conversion derives from that single definition, which is why precise conversion is arithmetic rather than approximation.

Stones remain common in the UK and Ireland for body weight and are almost unused elsewhere, which is why 11 st 4 lb needs translating to 72 kg for most of the world - and to 158 lb for the United States.

How Is Weight Converter Calculated?

1 kg = 2.20462262 lb
1 stone = 14 lb = 6.35029318 kg
1 lb = 16 oz = 453.59237 g

How to use the weight converter

Enter a value, choose the unit it is in and the unit you want, and the result appears immediately. Stones display as whole stones plus remaining pounds, which is how they are actually spoken.

For body weight, one decimal place is plenty. For cooking, whole grams or quarter-ounces are the practical resolution.

Common conversions at a glance

1 kg = 2.205 lb. 1 lb = 0.454 kg. 1 stone = 6.35 kg = 14 lb. 1 oz = 28.35 g.

Useful body-weight anchors: 50 kg = 7 st 12 lb = 110 lb. 70 kg = 11 st 0 lb = 154 lb. 90 kg = 14 st 2 lb = 198 lb. 100 kg = 15 st 10 lb = 220 lb.

Which unit to use where

Metric is standard for medicine, science and most of the world. The United States uses pounds for body weight and ounces for food. The UK mixes the two: stones and pounds for people, kilograms for nearly everything else.

If you are recording weight over time, pick one unit and stay with it. Converting back and forth introduces rounding noise that can hide a real trend of a pound or two.

Methodology

Conversions use the exact international avoirdupois definitions: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 stone = 14 lb, 1 lb = 16 oz, 1 kg = 1,000 g. Values are converted through kilograms without intermediate rounding, so repeated conversions do not accumulate error.

Worked Example

70 kg converts to 154.32 lb, or 11 st 0.3 lb, or 2,469.2 oz.

Going the other way, 165 lb is 74.84 kg or 11 st 11 lb. The common shortcut of doubling kilograms and adding 10% gets you to 154 lb from 70 kg - accurate to within a tenth of a pound, which is fine for conversation and not for medication dosing.

Important Limitations

Weight and mass are used interchangeably here, as they are in everyday life; strictly, kilograms measure mass and pounds-force measure weight. Troy ounces, used for precious metals, are heavier than the avoirdupois ounces used here and are not supported. For clinical dosing or laboratory work, use the unrounded figure rather than a displayed value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?
2.20462262 lb. For mental arithmetic, double the kilograms and add 10% - 70 kg becomes 140 plus 14, or 154 lb.
How many kg is 1 stone?
6.35 kg. A stone is 14 pounds, so 11 stone is 154 lb or about 69.9 kg.
How do I convert my weight from stones and pounds to kg?
Multiply the stones by 14, add the leftover pounds, then multiply the total by 0.4536. So 12 st 6 lb is 174 lb, which is 78.9 kg.
How many grams in an ounce?
28.3495 g for the standard avoirdupois ounce used for food and body weight. The troy ounce used for gold and silver is 31.1035 g.
Why do some conversions give slightly different answers?
Rounding. Converters that round at each step accumulate small errors, especially through several units. This one converts through kilograms in full precision and rounds only for display.
