We cite only the specific equations our calculators implement. We do not list references we have not used.
BMR equation
Mifflin MD, St Jeor ST, Hill LA, Scott BJ, Daugherty SA, Koh YO. “A new predictive equation for resting energy expenditure in healthy individuals.” The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1990;51(2):241-247.
This is the equation implemented on our BMR calculator, in the exact form shown on the methodology page.
Activity multipliers
The multipliers of 1.2 through 1.9 used to estimate total daily energy expenditure are conventional planning factors used widely alongside predictive BMR equations. They are categorical approximations, not measurements, and we present them as such.
What is not on this page
We do not list credentials, medical reviewers, clinical trials or statistics that we have not actually relied on. If we add a calculator that uses a different published equation, that equation will be cited here at the same time the calculator is published.
