What Is Running Pace?
This running pace calculator solves the relationship between distance, time and pace. Enter any two and it returns the third.
It is the tool for the three questions runners ask constantly: what pace did I just run, what pace do I need for a goal time, and how long will a given distance take at the pace I can hold.
Understanding Your Running Pace Result
Pace is time divided by distance, expressed as minutes per mile or per kilometre. Speed is its inverse - distance divided by time - and it is the same information presented the other way round. Treadmills and cyclists prefer speed; runners almost universally think in pace.
The conversion between units trips people up more than the arithmetic. An 8:00 mile is 4:58 per kilometre. A 5:00 kilometre is 8:03 per mile. Because a kilometre is 0.621 miles, per-kilometre paces are always the smaller number, which is why 4:30/km sounds faster than the 7:15/mile it actually equals.

Pace, speed and effort
Pace and speed carry the same information, but pace is easier to act on mid-run: you can check a watch against a target of 8:15 far more usefully than against 7.3 mph.
Effort is the third view, and the most important for training. The same pace is easy in cool weather on a flat road and near-maximal in heat on a hilly course. Paces are targets for races; effort is the guide for training.
Using splits to run an even race
Even pacing is the most efficient way to race almost any distance. Setting a per-mile or per-kilometre target and checking against it stops the surge of adrenaline in the first mile from costing you minutes later.
A common refinement is the negative split - running the second half marginally faster than the first. It rarely feels natural, and it almost always produces a better finishing time than the alternative.
Methodology
The calculator applies pace = time / distance directly, with exact conversion factors (1 mile = 1.609344 km). No physiological modelling is involved: it reports the arithmetic relationship between the values you provide.
Worked Example
A 10 km run in 52 minutes is 5:12 per kilometre, or 8:22 per mile.
Working backwards: to break 25 minutes for 5 km you need 5:00 per kilometre, or 8:03 per mile. Holding that for the first kilometre and drifting to 5:20 by the third is the classic way a runner misses that target by 40 seconds - which is exactly what split planning is for.
Important Limitations
Pace arithmetic assumes an even effort. Real races are shaped by hills, wind, heat, terrain and how well you paced the first mile. GPS watches typically carry 1-2% distance error, more under tree cover or between tall buildings, which shifts reported pace accordingly. The calculator does not predict what pace you can sustain - only what a given time requires.

- Divide your total time by the distance covered. A 45-minute 5-mile run is 45 / 5 = 9:00 per mile. The calculator handles the minutes-and-seconds arithmetic that makes this awkward to do in your head.
- What is a good running pace?
- Recreational runners typically train between 9:00 and 12:00 per mile, with easy runs slower than that. Pace varies enormously with fitness, age, terrain and the purpose of the run - most of your running should feel comfortably conversational.
- How do I convert pace per mile to pace per kilometre?
- Divide the per-mile pace by 1.609. An 8:00 mile is 8.00 / 1.609 = 4.97 minutes, or 4:58 per kilometre.
- Should easy runs have a target pace?
- Use effort rather than pace. Easy runs should let you hold a conversation; that usually lands 60-120 seconds per mile slower than race pace, and it shifts day to day with fatigue, heat and terrain.
- How much does a hill change my pace?
- Roughly 12-20 seconds per mile for each 1% of gradient uphill, with less than half of that recovered running back down. Judging hilly routes by pace rather than effort is the fastest way to run them too hard.
