What Is Race Pace?

This race pace calculator takes a goal finish time for any race distance and returns the pace you need to average, in both minutes per mile and per kilometre.

It covers the standard distances - 5 km, 10 km, half marathon, marathon - and any custom distance you enter, which makes it useful for the 8 km cross-country races and 12-mile trail events the preset tools ignore.

Understanding Your Race Pace Result

Required pace is simply goal time divided by distance, but its meaning changes sharply with the distance involved. Five-kilometre pace is close to the fastest you can hold aerobically for a sustained effort; marathon pace sits well below your threshold and is limited as much by fuelling and durability as by fitness.

That is why pace targets do not transfer directly between distances. A runner who races 5 km at 7:00 per mile will typically race a half marathon around 7:40 and a marathon nearer 8:10. The gap between those numbers reflects endurance rather than speed, and it narrows as training volume rises.

Choosing a goal time you can hold

Base it on a recent race rather than a good training session. Recent results at any distance predict performance at another far better than how strong you felt on Tuesday.

If you have no recent race, run a hard 5 km time trial and work outward from it. It is unpleasant for twenty minutes and saves you from an ambitious goal that unravels at halfway.

Splits and race execution

Even pacing wins races at every distance from 1,500 m upward. Note your target splits, and if the first one comes in fast, ease off immediately rather than banking the time - the bank does not pay out.

Adjust for conditions before the start. Heat, wind and hills all justify a slower target, and recognising that early is the difference between a slow race and a bad one.

Methodology

Pace is calculated as goal time divided by race distance, with exact unit conversion. Standard distances use official measurements: 5 km, 10 km, 21.0975 km for the half marathon and 42.195 km for the marathon.

Worked Example

A 50-minute 10 km requires 8:03 per mile or 5:00 per kilometre.

A 1:45:00 half marathon requires 8:00 per mile, with 10 km passing at about 49:45. For a 25-minute 5 km you need 8:03 per mile - the same pace as the 10 km example above, which is a good illustration of why the shorter race is not simply an easier version of the longer one.

Important Limitations

Required pace is arithmetic and says nothing about whether the goal is achievable. Course profile, surface, weather and race-day tactics all change the effort a given pace demands. Trail and hill races cannot be paced by the clock at all - effort and heart rate are the only usable guides there.

How do I work out my race pace?
Divide your goal time by the race distance. The calculator does this across units and adds split times, which is where doing it by hand becomes error-prone.
What pace should I run a 5k?
For most recreational runners, 5 km race pace is roughly 30-45 seconds per mile faster than a comfortable training run. It should feel hard by the second kilometre and very hard by the fourth.
How do I convert my race pace between distances?
As a rough guide, add about 6% to your 5 km pace for 10 km, about 15% for a half marathon and about 22-25% for a marathon. The gaps narrow with higher training volume.
Should I start faster or slower than goal pace?
Slower, in almost every case. Starting 5-10 seconds per mile under goal pace for the first mile costs you seconds and buys you minutes at the end.
Does this work for trail races?
Only loosely. Elevation and technical terrain make clock pace close to meaningless on trails - most runners plan those by estimated time and perceived effort instead.
