What Is Pace?

Enter a distance and a time and this calculator returns your pace per mile and per kilometre, your speed in mph and km/h, and what that pace would produce over standard race distances. It covers running, walking and cycling equally well.

Understanding Your Pace Result

Pace is time divided by distance, the inverse of speed, and runners use it because it is easier to hold a target on a watch than a speed. A 10-minute mile is 6 mph, a 5-minute kilometre is 12 km/h. Converting between the two systems is where mistakes happen: a mile is 1.609344 km, so a 5:00 per km pace is 8:03 per mile, not 8:00.

How Is Pace Calculated?

Pace = total time / distance

Methodology

The entered hours, minutes and seconds are converted to total seconds. Distance is converted to both miles and kilometres, and total time is divided by each to give pace. Equivalent race times multiply your pace per kilometre by the standard distances of 5, 10, 21.0975 and 42.195 km, assuming even pacing.

Worked Example

A 10 km run finished in 52:30 is 3,150 seconds over 10 km, which is 5:15 per kilometre or 8:27 per mile, a speed of 11.43 km/h. At that pace a half marathon would take about 1:50:47.

Important Limitations

Equivalent race times here are a straight pace projection, not a physiological prediction; in practice most runners slow slightly as distance increases, and formal predictors such as Riegel apply a fatigue exponent. Hills, heat, wind and course surface all change what a given pace costs, and GPS distance itself carries error on twisting or built-up courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate running pace?
Divide your total time by the distance. A 52:30 10K is 3,150 seconds divided by 10, or 5:15 per kilometre.
What is a good running pace?
It depends entirely on training and distance. A common recreational range is 9-12 minutes per mile for easy running, with easy pace deliberately slower than race pace.
How do I convert min per km to min per mile?
Multiply your per-kilometre pace by 1.609344. A 5:00 per km pace is 8:03 per mile.
Can I use this for walking or cycling?
Yes. The calculation is the same for any distance and time, and the speed figures are often more useful for cycling.
