BMI Calculator for Women
Work out your body mass index and see where it sits on the adult scale, with the context women actually need: body-fat differences, waist thresholds and when BMI does not apply.
What Is BMI for Women?
This BMI calculator for women takes your height and weight and returns your body mass index along with the weight range that would place you in the healthy band.
There is no separate female BMI formula. The same equation and the same World Health Organization cut-offs apply to everyone over 18. What differs is context: women carry more essential body fat than men at the same index, which is why the number should be read alongside a waist measurement rather than treated as a body-fat reading on its own.
Understanding Your BMI for Women Result
BMI sorts adults into four bands. Below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is the healthy range, 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30.0 or above is obesity. Those boundaries came from large population studies linking body mass index to long-term health outcomes, not from any measurement of fat.
For women specifically, a healthy body-fat percentage sits roughly between 21% and 33% depending on age, against 8% to 20% for men. A woman and a man with an identical BMI of 23 will usually have quite different body compositions, and both can be perfectly healthy. Where BMI earns its place is as a fast first screen: it flags who might benefit from a closer look, not who is or is not healthy.
How Is BMI for Women Calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)^2
Imperial form: BMI = 703 x weight (lb) / height (in)^2
The formula and its cut-offs are identical for women and men. Only the interpretation differs. How to use this BMI calculator
Choose imperial or metric, enter your height, enter your current weight and press calculate. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning, after using the bathroom and before eating, for the most consistent figure.
The result gives you the index itself, the category it falls in, and the weight range that would put you in the healthy band at your height. Re-check every few weeks rather than daily - day-to-day movement is almost entirely water.
Factors that affect your BMI reading
Muscle mass raises BMI without raising body fat, which is why the index misreads strength athletes. Fluid retention from your cycle, salt intake or hot weather can add several pounds within a day. Height loss with age quietly raises BMI even at a stable weight, because the denominator shrinks.
Ethnicity matters too. The World Health Organization recommends lower action points for South Asian and East Asian populations, where cardiometabolic risk rises at a lower index than in European-ancestry groups.
What to check alongside BMI
Waist circumference is the single most useful companion measure: above 35 in (88 cm) for women indicates raised risk regardless of BMI. Waist-to-height ratio, which should stay below 0.5, is another quick screen. If you want an actual body-composition figure rather than a proxy, a body-fat estimate or a lean body mass calculation will tell you more than any weight-to-height ratio can.
Methodology
The calculator converts your entry to metric, then divides weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. Imperial entries use the equivalent 703 x lb / in^2 form. Your healthy-weight range is produced by solving the same equation backwards at BMI 18.5 and BMI 24.9 for your height.
Categories follow the WHO adult classification, which is also used by the NHS and the CDC for adults aged 18 and over.
Worked Example
A woman who is 5 ft 5 in (165 cm) and weighs 145 lb (65.8 kg) has a BMI of 24.2, which sits at the upper end of the healthy band. For her height, the healthy range runs from about 111 lb to 150 lb.
Add 15 lb and her BMI becomes 26.6, moving her into the overweight band, even though a 15 lb change can easily be muscle, water or the swing across a single menstrual cycle.
Important Limitations
BMI cannot separate fat from muscle, bone or fluid. It is not valid during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and pre-pregnancy BMI is what clinicians use for weight-gain guidance. Athletes and very muscular women are routinely misclassified as overweight. The thresholds were derived largely from European-ancestry populations, and lower cut-offs are recommended for people of South Asian, Chinese and some other backgrounds. Anyone under 18 should use age-and-sex percentile charts instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is BMI different for women?
- The calculation is not. The same formula and the same 18.5-24.9 healthy band apply to adult women and men. The difference is interpretation: women have more essential body fat at the same index, so a healthy female body-fat percentage is roughly 21-33% against 8-20% for men.
- What is a good BMI for a woman?
- Anywhere between 18.5 and 24.9 is classed as healthy. There is no single ideal number inside that range, and a woman at 19 is not healthier than one at 24 by virtue of the index alone.
- Can I use this calculator while pregnant?
- No. BMI is not meaningful during pregnancy. Clinicians use your pre-pregnancy BMI to guide recommended gestational weight gain, so use your weight before conception and discuss it with your midwife or doctor.
- Does BMI change with my menstrual cycle?
- The index itself does not, but the weight you enter can. Cyclical fluid retention of 2-5 lb is common, which is enough to move BMI by a full point. Weigh yourself at the same point in your cycle if you are tracking trends.
- My BMI says overweight but I lift weights. Should I worry?
- Probably not on the basis of BMI alone. Muscle is denser than fat, so trained women often land in the overweight band with low body fat. Check your waist measurement - above 35 in (88 cm) is the threshold associated with raised cardiometabolic risk - or measure body fat directly.
